The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) initially suspended Fakhar Zaman for two PSL matches after a ball tampering incident for Lahore Qalandars.

The Fakhar Zaman’s ball tampering episode refuses to settle quietly. Two days after being handed a two-match suspension, the Lahore Qalandars batter has formally challenged the decision, doubling down on an already messy situation in PSL 2026.

The charge started from the closing moments of Qalandars’ defeat to Karachi Kings. With 14 needed off the final over, Fakhar was seen handling the ball before it was handed back to Haris Rauf. The umpires quickly intervened. The ball was changed, and five penalty runs were awarded, effectively reducing the target and tilting the game in Karachi’s favour.

Fakhar Zaman contests suspension after ball-tampering verdict

Match officials Shahid Saikat and Faisal Khan Aafreedi, along with TV umpire Asif Yaqoob and fourth umpire Tariq Rasheed, reported the incident. Following a hearing led by match referee Roshan Mahanama, Fakhar was found guilty of a Level 3 offence under Article 2.14 of the PSL Code of Conduct.

The PCB confirmed a two-match suspension, ruling him out of key fixtures against Multan Sultans (April 3) and Islamabad United (April 9).

However, Fakhar has not accepted the verdict. According to Geo News, he has challenged the sanction after maintaining his innocence during the disciplinary hearing. He was present at the proceedings along with captain Shaheen Shah Afridi, team director Sameen Rana and manager Farooq Anwar, where he reportedly denied any attempt to alter the condition of the ball. Under PSL regulations, Fakhar had a 48-hour window to respond. By choosing to contest, the matter will now take some time to settle.

Lahore Qalandars dealing with mounting off-field issues

What makes the situation more concerning for Lahore Qalandars is that this is no isolated incident. The franchise is already navigating a series of off-field setbacks early in the season.

Captain Shaheen Shah Afridi has been fined PKR 1 million for breaching security protocols at the team hotel. In a separate case, Rawalpindi’s Naseem Shah was hit with a massive penalty by the PCB’s disciplinary committee following a controversial social media post that violated the terms of his central contract.

On the field, the consequences have already been felt. The five-run penalty in the Karachi game proved decisive in a four-wicket defeat. Now, with Fakhar potentially unavailable and uncertainty lingering around the appeal, Lahore Qalandars will be certainly feeling some effects.
