One of the biggest hurdles fans used to face when building a new gaming computer today was the skyrocketing cost of memory. As a result of the massive boom in artificial intelligence technology, prices have risen by 106% since their 2024 lows. If you have been waiting around for a price drop in memory in order to upgrade your computer, your wait is over, and you can thank Google for it.
Google TurboQuant Revealed Impacted Prices of RAM worldwide
Recently, Google has introduced a revolutionary new technology in artificial intelligence, also called TurboQuant. What this new algorithm does is drastically reduce the memory space required for artificial intelligence programs. It has successfully reduced the Key-Value cache memory of artificial intelligence programs by one-sixth of its original size.
Although this is a huge leap forward for artificial intelligence programs, there has been widespread panic among hardware investors due to this new development.
Fearing a sudden and permanent drop in global memory demand, the stock market witnessed a sharp dip across the RAM market. Almost $450 billion has been wiped off memory chip stocks.
What This Means for PC Gamers
Basically, you get an option to finally buy high-end RAM without emptying your wallet. Because of the sudden market panic, DDR5 prices have crashed by up to 30% globally, including major cuts across Chinese markets.
As you can observe from the recent Amazon listings, the price drops are already significant for consumers:
- A high-capacity 32GB DDR5 memory kit has dropped from $490 to $379.99.
- A standard 16GB DDR5 memory kit has dropped from $260 to $219.99.
This news is especially important because just recently we saw reports suggesting that Sony is planning to increase the price of PS5 and PS4. This news coming at this time may be major relief, especially for those who want to shift to PC gaming.
