Star Australian batter Steven Smith finally made his Pakistan Super League (PSL) debut on March 28 with Multan Sultans (Sialkot Stallionz). The Aussie great, who has featured in several T20 franchise leagues across the globe, including Indian Premier League (IPL), Big Bash League (BBL), among others, helped his side register 5-wicket win in the campaign opener against Islamabad United at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

While chasing a competitive total of 172, Steven Smith opened the innings for the Sultans alongside Sahibzada Farhan and scored 31 runs off 23 deliveries at a strike rate of 134.78. Notably, Smith was a direct signing of the Sialkot Stallionz after the new rule allowed franchises to directly sign one player outside of the auction list.

Moreover, Smith joined the Sultans after he went unsold at the IPL 2026 mini-auction in December 2025 despite showing interest in continuing to play T20 cricket.

Steve Smith keen to represent Australia at 2028 LA Olympics

While Smith is coming into the PSL 2026 after a brilliant BBL 2025-26 with the Sydney Sixers, the 36-year-old not only helped his team finish as the runners-up but also proved key with the bat, amassing 299 runs at an average under 60 and a strike rate of 167.97.

Despite a stellar show in BBL, he was snubbed from Australia’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad, but eventually came in as Josh Hazlewood’s replacement. However, he didn’t get to play a game. With his continuous intent and interest to play T20 cricket, Smith also hopes to represent the team at the Olympic Games, set to be held in 2028 in Los Angeles.

During his one-on-one conversation, Smith said, “My main goal, as I’ve said before, is to get in the team when the Olympics is rolling around. I’d be keen to do that. That’d be pretty cool. Keep doing what I’m doing and you never know.” However, Smith will look to score a lot of runs in PSL 2026, he will next take the field on April 1 when the Multan Sultans take on Hyderabad Kingsmen at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
