Catch how Mumbai Indians (MI) could line up in their opening IPL 2026 game against KKR At Wankhede Stadium.

Mumbai Indians have been winless in their first games of an IPL season since 2013. For 15 years, they have endured the pain of first-match blues. A shade of blue that doesn’t suit them. But it has been a ritual now. But that ritual can be broken this time. They open their campaign against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), a team that can break MI’s opening game curse. After all, MI have an 11-2 record over KKR while playing at Wankhede Stadium.

KKR are short on options. They have lost multiple pace bowlers either due to injury or unforeseen circumstances. Now, they are banking on a youngster to restrict a power-packed MI batting unit. But what about Mumbai? How will they lineup? Is Jasprit Bumrah fit and available? What about the overseas duo of Will Jacks and Mitchell Santner? Let’s talk about it below.

De Kock vs Rickelton: a fight for a spot

The batting unit for Mumbai is pretty much sorted. Rohit Sharma is a no-brainer. He is leaner, fitter and will be rearing to go in his 19th consecutive season. Meanwhile, the troika of Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya will be enjoying their time after getting rid of the burden of playing the T20 World Cup 2026. They will be free and ultra-aggressive in their approach. The only thing to look forward to would be the batting position of Tilak, who did well as a finisher for India but generally plays ahead for MI.

However, Rohit’s partner isn’t decided yet. MI have two eerily similar options. Both South Africans. Both southpaws. Both are keeper-bats and both are aggressive in their own right. One has a successful history with MI, while the other can take that history forward. We are talking about Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton. Both have an equal chance of partnering Rohit. Both had a superb SA20.

However, Rickelton pips De Kock in the fact that he had a better T20 World Cup, scoring 228 runs at 32.57 and SR of 170.15. Meanwhile, De Kock’s tally saw him score 181 runs at 22.63 and SR of 135.07. Clearly, Rickelton is in better form and is a better player of spin as compared to de Kock.

Unavailability of Jacks and Santner solves MI puzzle

As per the latest news, both Will Jacks and Mitchell Santner have asked for an extended break after a tiring T20 World Cup. Hence, they both will not be available for this MI vs KKR clash. This solves multiple headaches for MI. Now, Mumbai won’t be having to bench Sherfane Rutherford, who is in tremendous form lately.

Since 15 Dec 2025, Rutherford has been on an incredible run, having scored 683 runs at an average of 56.91 and at an outstanding strike rate of 164.57 across T20s. If Jacks had been there, MI would have gone with him, considering he was one of the best players at the T20 World Cup. But now, Rutherford’s place is not in danger and he can provide that oomph in the MI batting unit.

Similarly, Allah Ghazanfar becomes a no-brainer as well, since there’s no Mitchell Santner. While it will affect the depth of MI’s batting somewhat, but in Ghazanfar they have a wicket-taker. He is yet to feature in the IPL and can cause trouble for the KKR batters, who don’t have many spin-hitters in their lineup.

Will Jasprit Bumrah play MI vs KKR game?

With Ghazanfar being a sole spin option at the Wankhede, MI can basically play with four specialist pacers, with Pandya not being part of them. That is the magic of the impact sub rule. Deepak Chahar and Trent Boult are certainties, with both being natural powerplay bowlers.

Now, the big question is will Bumrah play, especially joining the team only two days before the opening game? Well, he is fit and available. This is not a report saying it but MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene claimed it! Bumrah joined the MI team pretty late as he checked in at the BCCI CoE for a routine checkup. There are no injury concerns for Bumrah, who was seen practising his yorkers as well last night.

With him fit and available, Bumrah will be an automatic choice, as much will be dependent on the man, who is basically a cheat code in this format. With Boult and Chahar taking care of the new ball duties, Bumrah will be a massive asset in the middle and death overs. His economy in the middle overs is barely over a run-a-ball, while it is just 6.7 in death overs since the IPL 2024.

For the last remaining spot, MI have three options. They can either add a spinner in Mayank Markande but the Wankhede pitch doesn’t always suit a tweaker. If MI want a pacer, they can choose between Ashwani Kumar and Shardul Thakur. While Thakur can lengthen the batting somewhat, Ashwani will be adding a left-arm angle. He is a proper T20 bowler and his spell of 4/24 against the same opposition on his IPL debut will be still fresh in everyone’s mind.
