The day has finally come, when 10 teams fight it out for over two months, to lay their hands on the most prestigious T20 trophy. IPL 2026 will kickstart at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, where the defending champions RCB take on SRH on March 28. And as is the case every season, all eyes will be on three pillars of the league – MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma, and what they can do individually, and for their respective teams.
But coming into the 19th season, it is only imperative, to look back at some of the records of the IPL.
The most by a team in IPL
10 – The most final appearances by any team until now. This record is held by CSK, who made the summit clashes in 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012. 2013, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2023.
12– CSK also hold the record for most playoffs appearances. 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012. 2013, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2023.
277 – MI have played the most number of matches in the IPL. KKR come in next with 271, followed by RCB at 265, DC at 264, and PBKS at 263.
151 – Once again MI top the list for most matches won. CSK has a better win %, but are second on the list with 143 wins, KKR fall in third at 135.
140 – On the other hand, DC have lost the most matches. PBKS are close second at 139, and RCB are third with 132 losses.
287 – This is the highest total in the IPL — that SRH achieved against RCB in 2024. The lowest score is 49, by RCB against KKR in 2017.
Batting records, dominated by Virat Kohli
8661 – Virat Kohli is the leading run-getter, overall, in the IPL. He has scored these runs in 259 innings, where his average is 39. Rohit Sharma is second with 7046 runs.
973: Another record held by Virat Kohli is, most runs scored in a season. That number came in 2016, where he nearly scored 1000 runs, in just 16 innings.
71 – Kohli also has the most 50 plus scores in IPL. That includes 8 tons and 63 fifties. David Warner is a close second with 66. Rohit is at 49.
8 – This keeps getting better. Kohli has most tons too. Jos Buttler comes 2nd at 7, Chris Gayle at 6, while KL Rahul has 5.
771 – Yet another one. Kohli has the most fours to his name. The second is Shikhar Dhawan – 768, followed by David Warner at 663.
IPL’s bowling records
221 – Yuzvendra Chahal is the leading wicket-taker in the tournament. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has 198 to his name, while Sunil Narine has 192.
2 – Four players share the record for most fifers in IPL. The record is held by Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, James Faulkner, Jaydev Unadkat.
32 – This record too is jointly held. Harshal Patel and Dwayne Bravo picked up 32 wickets each in a season.
6.68 – Even after these many years, Muttiah Muralitharan has the best career economy rate. That is followed by Roelof van der Merwe’s 6.74.
76 – Most runs ever conceded in an IPL clash by Jofra Archer. The next on the list is 75 by Mohammed Shami, Mohit Sharma isn’t behind with figures of 0/73.
