Punjab Kings (PBKS) were 6 runs away from securing their maiden Indian Premier League title in 2025 but were denied by RCB. Let that sink in! As an overall unit, Shreyas Iyer and co. had ticked all the boxes in the previous season, finishing on top of the table with 9 wins to their name. Coached by Ricky Ponting and led by veteran Iyer, the team had quite literally everything needed to lay their hands on a maiden trophy. However, luck is what they lacked and they paid heavily for it.
Come IPL 2026, PBKS boast of a solid batting line-up, an impressive middle-order and all-rounder unit and an enviable pace attack. However, that does not absolve them of all troubles. There are some striking shortcomings as well. Let’s take a look PBKS’ strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats below.
What are PBKS strengths in IPL 2026?
PBKS’ biggest strengths is their stacked batting line-up. Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh, both batters who showed promising signs in the previous season, are expected to continue as openers, and will be trusted by the team to give them the flying start that they require. The experience of Prabhsimran and the explosiveness of Arya is perfect for Punjab Kings.
Shreyas Iyer has also been in great form off late, although he was snubbed for the T20 World Cup 2026. Regardless, Iyer will be hoping to replicate his feat from IPL 2025 where he amassed 604 runs at average of over 50. He is by far the perfect number 3 that PBKS can have.
Another big asset that PBKS possess is a strong middle-order unit which comprises of stars who can strike huge maximums and have vast experience. It can help in their bowling department too. The likes of Marcus Stoinis, Shashank Singh and Marco Jansen among the others are quite experienced and contribute with both bat and ball effectively, as it has been observed in the previous IPL season and the recently concluded T20 WC as well.
Another department where PBKS have zero issues with is their pace department. A well-balanced unit, comprising of almost an equal number of experienced Indian and overseas fast bowlers, is key to PBKS’ success in IPL 2026. Arshdeep Singh will of course be the leader of the pack, and will be supported by Jansen, Vyshak, Lockie Ferguson, Bartlett and Dwarshius.
What are PBKS’ weaknesses in IPL 2026?
There are not many weaknesses for PBKS in IPL 2026 but the biggest of them all is the lack of experienced spinners. Yuzvendra Chahal remains the sole spinner in the side who has vast experience and is among the leading wicket-takers in the IPL. Of course, he has Cooper Conolly to support him, but apart from that, the team has no other reliable options. This could come back to haunt the team, especially at certain venues where spinners are favoured more.
Opportuities for PBKS in IPL 2026
The biggest opportunity for PBKS is laying their hands on the silverware for the first time as they possess a strong unit that nearly got them across the line in the previous season. Second, there is ample chances for Prabhsimran and Arya to find a way to impress the selectors and make their way into the Indian T20I setup by letting their bat do the talking consistently.
Third, Shreyas Iyer has a golden opportunity to not only re-enter the Indian T20I team but also pose himself as a future captain. That will solely depend on how well the team fares and how well he can shepherd his side throughout the tournament.
Threats for PBKS in IPL 2026
PBKS have a problem of plenty when it comes to picking their playing XI in IPL 2026. There are too many credible all-rounders in the side, which will be a headache for Punter and Iyer to zero in on the perfect combination. The second, as mentioned before, is the lack of effective spinners.
