Mumbai Indians will be eyeing to secure a historic sixth IPL trophy when they commence their 2026 campaign by taking on KKR in their tournament opener on March 29. Largely, nothing went wrong for the five-time champions in the previous edition of the tournament as they finished 4th on the points table, made it to Qualifier 2, but couldn’t make it to the final. Most members of MI’s line-up, who would potentially make it to the playing XI, have been in top form in the past year.
However, MI might be forced to make some crucial and tactical decisions when it comes to deciding their playing XI for IPL 2026. It is more to do with the batting order than the bowling unit – for the latter remains sorted with plenty of alternatives left on the bench. Ahead of IPL 2026, let us take a look at MI’s predicted playing XI.
MI predicted playing XI for IPL 2026
| Position | Player |
|---|---|
| 1 | Rohit Sharma |
| 2 | Ryan Rickleton |
| 3 | Suryakumar Yadav |
| 4 | Sherfane Rutherford |
| 5 | Tilak Varma |
| 6 | Hardik Pandya (C) |
| 7 | Naman Dhir |
| 8 | Mitchell Santner |
| 9 | Deepak Chahar |
| 10 | Jasprit Bumrah |
| 11 | Trent Boult |
Who will open with Rohit Sharma?
The most important battle will be for the role of an opener for MI along with Rohit Sharma, and this boils down to between two South Africans – Ryan Rickleton and Quinton de Kock. Rickleton made 388 runs from 14 matches in his very first IPL campaign in 2025, forming a formidable opening unit with the Hitman. Meanwhile, de Kock who was last part of the five-time champions in 2021, returns to the side after fetching rather poor results in his previous stint with KKR in IPL 2025 (152 runs in 8 matches).
While it is quite obvious that de Kock is more experienced compared to Rickleton when it comes to the IPL, it is the numbers off late that matters. Rickleton managed to score 228 runs from 8 T20 World Cup matches (that concluded recently) as opposed to de Kock’s 181 runs in as many innings. Both are left-handed batters. While MI may be tempted to use de Kock’s experience, it is likely that they stick with Ryan at the top of the order. After all, he has a good camaraderie with Rohit Sharma.
All eyes on SKY and who will be number 4?
MI captain Suryakumar Yadav is bound to come out to bat at number 3, as he is used to doing so in the past. However, his recent form hasn’t been great. In fact, he struggled in the recently concluded T20 WC, managing to register a highest score of 84 runs against USA following which he did not breach the 50-run mark even a single time in the remainder of the 8 games. His poor form in the recent few months might prompt the MI think-tank to send someone else at number 3, but they have very few options. Hence, SKY is likely to stick to that position.
At number 4 will be MI’s latest recruit Sherfane Rutherford who was traded from GT. The Windies star aced his role at that position for the Titans in 2025, scoring 185 runs in 6 matches, at an average of 37 and a strike rate of over 150.
Tilak Varma is MI’s new finisher?
Tilak Varma was largely known as a top-order batter, featuring at number 3 or number 4 for the maximum amount of times, be it in IPL or for India in T20Is. But not any more. That has changed since the T20 World Cup 2026. Not that he hasn’t batted below for MI in the past, but he seems to be now relishing his role as the finisher more than ever before.
Tilak batted at number 3 in 5 of India’s 9 T20 World Cup 2026 matches. He managed to register scores of 25, 25, 25, 31 and 1 – which showed that despite getting off to good starts, he was under severe pressure and hence wasn’t able to convert them to good knocks. Varma was then asked to bat at 5 or below for the remainder of the games and the results were splendid!
During the course of the next four games, he registered scores of 44* off 16 while batting at 6 vs ZIM, 27 off 15 vs WI at 5, 21 off 7 vs ENG at 7 and 8* off 6 at 6 vs NZ in the T20 World Cup 2026 final. What this proved was that not only did Varma provide more stability to the Indian middle-order but also was he able to bat more freely, something that he himself has acknowledged.
