The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) aren’t ready to make any decision hastily. Harshit Rana, one of their retained Indian quicks, is out of IPL 2026 after undergoing knee surgery. The injury, picked up during a warm-up game before the T20 World Cup, has left KKR short on Indian seam options even before a ball has been bowled.
The images from the BCCI Naman Awards, where Rana needed a crutch to walk, were hard to digest. Then, Abhishek Nayar’s admission of Rana being out only confirmed what the franchise had feared. But instead of rushing into a decision, KKR are taking their time.
KKR opt for patience as Rana’s replacement hunt continues
As reported by Revsportz, the franchise is in no hurry to name a replacement. Despite looking at multiple options, KKR feel that there isn’t any like-for-like replacement for Rana. And that is true, as the Delhi pacer was on an upward curve as he made his debut across all three formats for India in no time.
Then, he provides a bustling pace with an ability to smack boundaries lower down the order. The closest like him in KKR’s compass right now is RS Ambrish, who recently played an integral part in India’s U-19 World Cup win. KKR have already run the rule over a bunch of pacers in recent trials at Eden Gardens and in Mumbai. Names like Simarjeet Singh, Navdeep Saini, Akash Madhwal, KM Asif and Sandeep Warrier have all been assessed closely by the scouting team.
Simarjeet, in particular, seems to have edged ahead. He offers a similar bowling profile to Rana. Tall, hits the deck hard, operates in the 140s and has the ability to nail yorkers at the death. Not the same batting ability, but close enough in terms of role. KM Asif has raw pace and recent domestic form on his side, including a five-wicket haul in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Warrier, meanwhile, brings familiarity with the KKR setup, which always counts for something in a long tournament.
Thin KKR bowling assets for IPL 2026
Yet, despite these options, the management isn’t convinced enough to pull the trigger immediately. Part of the hesitation also comes from a larger concern. The pace unit is already stretched. Akash Deep is ruled out. Matheesha Pathirana is yet to get clearance and remains a doubtful starter. Mustafizur Rahman is no longer in the squad. Andre Russell’s overs are gone too.
That leaves KKR leaning heavily on Vaibhav Arora, an injury-prone Umran Malik, Kartik Tyagi and new recruit Blessing Muzarabani, who impressed in the T20 World Cup with 13 wickets. Apparently, KKR have already signed young left-arm pacer Saurabh Dubey as a replacement for Akash Deep.
