Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) didn’t expect to be here this early. Ten days out from their opening game, and they are already forced into damage control. Harshit Rana, one of their most promising Indian quicks, is all but out of IPL 2026 after a knee ligament injury that required surgery. The visuals from the BCCI Naman Awards, where he struggled to even walk up the stairs, were hard to witness for all KKR fans.
Although KKR have enough backup available to them, their plans have been hit, especially after losing a player they retained. Now, KKR are scanning the market for an Indian pacer who can do the job for them.
Simarjeet leads the race, but KKR keep options open
If early indications are anything to go by, Simarjeet Singh is right at the front of the queue. This was reported earlier as well. The Delhi pacer has quietly impressed the KKR think tank during trials, both in Mumbai and now in Kolkata, where the franchise has been running a close watch under scouts Biju George and Manvinder Bisla.
While he is much less of a batter than Rana, Simarjeet’s profile is similar to that of the injured international. Tall, hits the deck hard, operates comfortably in the 140s, and has a yorker when needed. It is not a surprise that he has emerged as the standout among the six-odd pacers who turned up.
Alongside him, two more names have been put through the grind at Eden Gardens on Wednesday. KM Asif and Sandeep Warrier. Asif brings raw pace and had a standout Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy performance where he picked up a five-for against Mumbai. He took a total of 15 wickets in six matches for Kerala. Warrier, on the other hand, is a known face for KKR. He has been around the system, understands the setup, and offers a slightly safer, more experienced option. For those unaware, Warrior has played one T20 international for India as well.
Pathirana yet to get SLC clearance
KKR invested heavily in the mini-auction. Cameron Green came in for a staggering ₹25.20 crore, while Matheesha Pathirana cost them ₹18 crore. But availability remains a question. Pathirana is yet to get clearance from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and is still recovering from a calf injury. There is no certainty around when, or even if, he joins.
Mustafizur Rahman is no longer in the mix after being released. Andre Russell isn’t there to provide those crucial overs anymore. And that leaves KKR leaning heavily on a group that comes with its own set of question marks.
Vaibhav Arora and Akash Deep are expected to shoulder responsibility, while Umran Malik’s fitness remains something you can’t take for granted. Kartik Tyagi is an option, but not someone who has consistently nailed down a role yet. That is where Blessing Muzarabani suddenly becomes central to their plans. The Zimbabwe pacer, fresh off a strong T20 World Cup where he picked up 13 wickets, looked sharp in the first training session. Tall, awkward bounce, and someone who can lead the attack if needed.
KKR will go into IPL 2026 with a strong spin core in Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy. That part is sorted. But in T20 cricket, especially in Indian conditions, you need at least two reliable Indian quicks to hold things together.
