KKR are already stacked in their Indian pace bowling unit, so they might not replace Harshit Rana at all for IPL 2026.

It was tough to see Harshit Rana hobble his way to the successfully conducted BCCI’s NAMAN awards. With a stick in his right hand, Rana was finding it difficult to even receive his award for the Best International Debut (Men) 2024–25. It looked like he may not turn up for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at all but ESPNcricinfo’s report suggests that he will only miss a bulk of action for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Rana’s knee trouble dates back to India’s T20 World Cup preparations earlier this year. During a warm-up match against South Africa, the young pacer felt discomfort in his right knee after bowling just one over. What initially looked like a strain eventually required surgery in February, forcing him to sit out the tournament India went on to win.

The recovery process is still ongoing. The BCCI medical staff have not committed to an exact return timeline, which means KKR will likely have to plan their early IPL games without him. That said, the door has not been completely shut on his participation this season. If rehabilitation progresses smoothly, Rana could still rejoin the squad later in the tournament, perhaps in the business end.

KKR are already feeling the heat in terms of pacers. The defending champions already had to reshuffle their fast-bowling resources after releasing Bangladesh left-arm seamer Mustafizur Rahman earlier in the year. The franchise moved quickly to bring in Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani, who even walked away from a Pakistan Super League (PSL) contract to join the IPL. Meanwhile, there’s no update on Matheesha Pathirana’s injury as well.

Even without Rana, KKR still have a varied pace attack to begin the season. Pathirana’s slingy pace remains their biggest weapon when available, while Indian quicks Vaibhav Arora, Akash Deep, Umran Malik and Kartik Tyagi provide depth. Seam-bowling all-rounders Cameron Green and Ramandeep Singh are also there.

Behind the scenes, the franchise has also looked at contingency plans. Delhi pacer Simarjeet Singh reportedly impressed during trials and could be brought in if Rana’s absence stretches longer than expected.

KKR open their IPL 2026 campaign against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on March 29 before returning to Eden Gardens for home matches against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants.
