T20 cricket is a format of small margins. One extra wide or an overthrow can change the outcome of the match. In a high-octane and pressure match like the India vs England semifinal, one mistake can cost you the match.
We’ve seen it already in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026. Max O’Dowd’s dropped catch resulted in the Netherlands losing. Or when one no-ball from Kagiso Rabada led to not one but two Super Overs.
What happens if IND vs ENG semifinal ends in a tie?
If the scores are level after the end of both innings, a Super Over will decide the tied match. If the Super Over ends in a tie as well, there will be Super Overs until a result is achieved.
History of ties & Super Over in cricket
The Super Over was first introduced by the ICC in the 2008 T20 World Cup. It replaced the famous bowl-out, which was used in the India vs Pakistan 2007 final after that match ended in a tie.
The ICC introduced the Super Over in the 50-over format in the 2011 ODI World Cup. But it wasn’t used. In the 2015 ODI World Cup, it was only applicable if a tie happens in the final. If a game were tied in other knockout matches, the team ranked higher in the group stage would go through.
From the 2017 Champions Trophy onwards, the ICC added the Super Over for all knockout matches. After the 2019 ODI World Cup, the ICC changed the Super Over rule after the controversial boundary count method saw England declared the winner over New Zealand. After that, the current Super Over was put into effect.
