With the fourth edition of Women’s Premier League (WPL) underway in the Indian subcontinent, the Gujarat Giants Women received a major setback on Tuesday, January 13. The Ashleigh Gardner-led franchise, who are unbeaten so far in the WPL 2026, saw young Indian all-rounder Anushka Sharma get ruled out of the tournament for a “short period” due to a minor injury.
The 22-year-old, who played a 30-ball 44 knock in the Giants’ opening match, sustained an injury on her right hand while fielding in the team’s game against Delhi Capitals (DC) on Sunday. Just prior to their third league fixture on Tuesday, Gujarat Giants took to X to share an update, which read, “After an unfortunate injury against Delhi Capitals, Anushka will be out of action for a short period. Wishing out Star Girl, a speedy and strong recovery.”
Ayushi Soni named Sharma’s replacement in GG vs MI tie
The franchise further informed that Anushka will remain under close supervision of the team’s medical staff and is progressing well. In her absence, the franchise has roped in 25-year-old Delhi batter Ayushi Soni in their game against Mumbai Indians (MI) Women. While the 22-year-old has travelled with the side, she was spotted with strapped hand.
Speaking of the Gujarat Giants Women, the Ash Gardner-led side are placed second in the points table with two victories in as many matches. While they are currently locking horns with MI Women, they would continue to extend their unbeaten run. Following their third game, the team will next play Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) Women on January 16 in Navi Mumbai.
