Faf du Plessis sustained the right thumb injury in Joburg Super Kings' match against MI Cape Town on January 10.

With South Africa’s premier T20 league, SA20 2025-26, nearing its business end, Joburg Super Kings have sustained a major blow. The Super Kings-owned franchise have lost skipper and veteran batter Faf du Plessis with an injury for the remainder of SA20 Season 4, which he sustained on January 10 in the team’s match against MI Cape Town.

The 41-year-old had sustained the thumb injury in Saturday’s fixture and could not take the field in the massive 234-run chase. Meanwhile, in place of Faf, teammate Donovan Ferreira was named the skipper.

Faf du Plessis to miss the remainder of SA20 2026 season

On the eve of their game against Sunrisers Eastern Cape, the franchise took to Twitter to confirm an update of Faf du Plessis missing the remaining season as he would require a surgical procedure on his injured thumb. In a post on Twitter, the Joburg Super Kings extended their support for their skipper, writing, “All our love with you, skipper. Faf du Plessis has been ruled out of the remainder of the SA20 season after suffering a right thumb ligament tear requiring a surgical repair. Our best wishes are with you.”

Speaking of the franchise, Joburg Super Kings are placed third in the points table with 17 points from three wins in seven games. However, they are a formidable side, but will hope to finish in the top two with three more games remaining for them in the league stage.

Faf du Plessis scored 135 runs in five innings at a strike rate of 151.69. However, despite three good starts, he could not convert them into fifties.
