UP Warriorz have named Australian icon Meg Lanning as their new captain ahead of Women’s Premier League (WPL 2026). The top-order batter, who was a part of Delhi Capitals Women (DC) until the previous season, was bought for Rs 1.90 crore at the mega auction in 2025. Lanning will replace all-rounder Deepti Sharma – who was the stand-in skipper for UPW in WPL 2025.
UPW name Meg Lanning as new captain
Lanning boasts of a prolific record as a captain in WPL, having led DC to the finals in all three seasons. The Australian now has a tall task in hand in helping UPW lay their hands on their maiden WPL trophy. The team has undergone a full-fledged revamp, with the team deciding to retain only one uncapped player in the form of Shweta Sehrawat ahead of the WPL 2026 mega auction.
“It is a real honour to be named captain of the UP Warriorz. As the WPL enters its fourth season, it’s been incredible to see how the league has evolved, the quality of cricket, the competitiveness, and the emergence of exciting new talent continue to raise the standard each year. This is a talented group with a strong mix of international experience and Indian players, and I’m really looking forward to the challenge ahead. We’ll work hard together and give ourselves every opportunity to lift the trophy,” Lanning said.
UP Warriorz will commence their WPL 2026 campaign by taking on Gujarat Giants on January 10 in Navi Mumbai. The final will be held on February 5 in Vaodara.
