Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa has asked India cricket team Test captain Shubman Gill to place more faith in Washington Sundar. The Tamil Nadu all-rounder has gone on to become a mainstay in the Indian team in the longest format of the game over the past year. Giving some tips to Gill following the 0-2 loss to South Africa at home, Uthappa said that it was imperative to give more overs to Sundar and Kuldeep in order for them to improve their game and help India win.
‘Gill should trust Washington Sundar’
In a video on his YouTube channel, Uthappa said that Washington and Kuldeep will have to play a lot of Test matches in order for Indian cricket to develop further. Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir have been called out in the past for underutilizing Washington with the ball and playing him more or less as a pure batter.
“I think Shubman, as a captain, needs to trust him [Washington Sundar]. Because certain players feel they can play a bowler easily, they don’t value skill as much as the next person, because he feels like he’s an easy bowler [to play against]. It’s human nature. It’s happened in Indian cricket before. But for the development of Indian cricket, Washington and Kuldeep have to play a lot of Test matches and bowl a bulk of overs,” Uthappa said.
Meanwhile, Uthappa also said that Kuldeep was a match-winner for India, adding that he needed to bowl 20-25 overs in each Test in order to give him more exposure. The former Indian cricketer pointed out that while India can win Tests with a good batting line-up, it also requires the bowlers to step up.
“We can win matches by batting, but to win a series, the bowling unit has to fire. For that, you need to develop players. We need to give exposure to bowlers. Kuldeep Yadav should bowl 20-25 overs, make him used to that,” Uthappa added.
