Similar to Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill will feature in just two Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) 2025-26 matches. The Indian Test and ODI captain was named in Punjab’s 18-man squad for the List A tournament, but he didn’t feature in the first two matches.
Shubman Gill’s ODI comeback plan
According to Sportstar, Gill will play the 5th and 6th group stage fixtures for Punjab. Against Sikkim on January 3 and Goa on January 6, both in Jaipur. The Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) expects Gill to join the squad around December 29, when Punjab takes on Uttarakhand.
“He will join the team in Jaipur around January 1 for those two games. While he is interested in playing the final group league fixture against Mumbai as well, it will all depend on the BCCI’s scheduling for the camps ahead of the home series against New Zealand,” a source told Sportstar.
Gill had missed the India vs South Africa ODI series due to the neck injury he sustained in the Kolkata Test. But sustained another injury during the T20I series. He has started training again and was spotted training at the PCA Stadium in Mohali.
He’ll lead Team India against New Zealand. But considering he’s been in and out of the team across formats due to injury, it’s good that he’ll look to find some rhythm in domestic cricket. Considering he was excluded from India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2026, it’ll be interesting to see how he performs in his best format, ODIs.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to announce India’s squad for the New Zealand ODI series in early January, on the 3rd or 4th.
