South Africa’s Test captain, Temba Bavuma, opened up about unsavoury comments made by Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah. During the Kolkata Test, Bumrah was caught body-shaming Bavuma on the stump mic.
Bumrah body shames Bavuma
The pacer used the Indian slang word ‘bauna’ while discussing taking a review for an LBW with interim captain Rishabh Pant. Bavuma missed a delivery from Bumrah and got wrapped on the pads. Talking about whether the ball would sail over the stumps, Bumrah used a derogatory word for people of diminutive stature.
No harm, no foul
There was a big uproar about the comments made by Bumrah. The pacer wasn’t sanctioned by the ICC but apologised to Bavuma the next day. The South African skipper has talked about the incident. Bavuma stated that Bumrah and Pant apologised to him and accepted it. That he follows a strict ‘what happens in the field, stays there’ policy.
However, he didn’t forget them. Bavuma used the comments for motivation, and it clearly worked as South Africa went on to beat India in Kolkata and Guwahati to claim the series 2-0.
“I know from my side there was an incident where they said something in their language about me. At the end of the day two senior players, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah, came and apologised. When the apology was made, I was in the dark about what it was about, I hadn’t heard it at the time, and I needed to check in with our media manager about it. What happens on the field, stays on the field but you don’t forget what is said. You use it as fuel and motivation, but there are no grudges per se,” Bavuma wrote in a column for ESPNcricinfo.
