Out-of-favour Bangladesh cricket team star Shakib al Hasan has made a U-turn on his retirement from T20Is and Tests and now wants to play all three formats of the game in a farewell series. The all-rounder, who retired from both the formats last year after the tour to India, hasn’t been in the scheme of things of the selectors and has also been embroiled in controversy and legal issues. Hasan now wants to play his final series at home in front of the Bangladesh fans before he brings the curtains down on his career.
Shakib al Hasan comes out of T20I, Test retirement
Speaking to Moeen Ali on Beard Before Wicket podcast, Shakib said that he was hopeful of returning to Bangladesh and play in front of his home crowd before he retires. He said that it was the only reason why he was keeping himself fit and to ensure that he was available for selection. Hasan said that he hasn’t retired officially from all three formats, adding that this was the first time he was revealing that.
“I am hopeful (to return to Bangladesh) and that’s why I am playing (to retire in front of home crowd) and I think it will happen and that’s the reason, the only reason I am playing (is to stay fit and stay in shape so that I can make me available for international cricket),” Shakib was quoted on the Beard Before Wicket podcast, which featured Moeen Ali, on Sunday.
Hasan expressed his desire to return to Bangladesh and play a full series of ODIs, T20Is and Tests before he retires. it is pertinent to point out that earlier this year, Bangladesh’s sports adviser had vowed that Shakib will never play for the country again after he had posted birthday wishes for former PM Sheikh Hasina.
“My plan is to go back to Bangladesh, play one full series of ODI, Test, and T20, and retire. I mean, [I can] retire from all formats in a series. So it can start from T20I, ODI and Test, or Test, ODI, T20I. Either way, I’m fine, but I want to play a whole series and retire. That’s what I want,” he said adding that he will not continue further after the series.
