When results go bad, Indian cricket turns into a pressure cooker, and after the Test whitewash to South Africa, opinions began flying in from every direction. But Gautam Gambhir, still burning from criticism surrounding the 408-run loss in Guwahati and the collapse in Kolkata, delivered a fiery response on Sunday night in Visakhapatnam.
After India clinched the ODI series 2-1 with a win in the third match, Gambhir walked into the press room and unloaded on Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal, who recently demanded a separate coach for red-ball cricket. Without naming him directly, Gambhir sent a very direct message: stay in your lane.
Stay in your domain: Gambhir hits back
Jindal had publicly criticised India’s Test performance and called for a split-coaching model after the defeat in Guwahati, writing that the red-ball side looked the weakest he had ever seen. But Gambhir wasn’t having any of it.
“A lot of things were said when we lost the Test series to South Africa, and half of them were not even related to cricket,” Gambhir said while speaking to reporters after the ODI series win in Vizag. “Ek IPL ke owner ne bhi likha split coaching ke baare mein. Hum kisi ke domain mein nahi jaate, so it’s important that people stay in their domain.”
Jindal’s, who is the CEO and co-owner of the Delhi Capitals (DC), original post on X had read: “This is what happens when red-ball specialists are not picked… Time for India to move to a specialist red-ball coach for Test cricket.”
Gambhir also criticised how the conversation ignored the fact that captain Shubman Gill was unavailable in both innings of the first Test due to a neck injury, something he felt dramatically changed the match India lost by only 30 runs. “When we lost the first Test by 30 runs, a lot was said about pitches and conditions, but not a single word was spoken about our captain not batting in two innings,” he said. “He has scored nearly 1000 runs this year. Losing him midway against a quality opposition matters.”
