Another day and another occasion when Rishabh Pant has thrown away his wicket carelessly. The southpaw’s aggressive brand of cricket has worked wonders for India multiple times in the past but it wasn’t the stage for him to showcase it on Day 3 of the IND vs SA 2nd Test. As a result of Pant wasting his wicket, India now find themselves in a perilous position in their attempt to close in on South Africa’s mammoth 489-run 1st innings total.
Pant loses wicket carelessly again
Pant managed to survive for just 8 deliveries before he was sent packing by Marco Jansen. The southpaw attempted a big slog by advancing down the track against the pacer, only for the ball to nick his willow and allow the keeper to complete an easy catch. To make matters worst, Rishabh went upstairs in desperate hopes of getting a review. However, it was just an occasion where India burnt a review as he was clearly out and was forced to walk back to the pavilion. In Sunil Gavaskar’s language, it was plain ‘stupid, stupid, stupid’ from Pant.
Resuming play on 9/0, India lost wickets in a heap, with the batters struggling to keep the scoreboard ticking and keeping the South African bowlers at bay. KL Rahul was the first to depart on Day 3 as he fell to Keshav Maharaj, bringing an end to the 65-run opening partnership between him and Jaiswal. His fellow opener managed to register his maiden fifty against SA but soon became Harmer’s victim. And that triggered the collapse for India.
India lost 6 wickets and managed to score just 27 runs, exposing their weakness at home once again. Sudharsan (15), Dhruv Jurel (0), Nitish Kumar Reddy (10), Ravindra Jadeja (6), all failed to fire, leaving India reeling at 136/7 after Tea.
