The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced India’s squad for the upcoming ODI and T20I series against South Africa. Since Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer have been ruled out with injury, replacements have been named for them in India’s ODI squad.
KL Rahul named India’s ODI captain
Rishabh Pant, who hasn’t played an ODI since August 2024, returns, and Tilak Varma, who was named India A captain recently, has also returned to the team after nearly 2 years. Ruturaj Gaikwad, who scored 210 runs, including one hundred and fifty-one, has been recalled.
Ravindra Jadeja, who was dropped for the Australia ODI series due to pace-friendly conditions Down Under, has made his way back to the team, with Axar Patel going out. Mohammed Siraj hasn’t been recalled, with Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna preferred over him.
KL Rahul has been named captain in Gill’s absence, while the BCCI hasn’t named a replacement for Shreyas, who was Gill’s deputy in Australia. Rahul has experience leading India in ODI cricket, but hasn’t been in the position since 2023. As for his record, the wicketkeeper batter has won 8 out of 12 as captain.
