India cricket team star Shubman Gill’s return to action could take more time than expected as the seriousness of his neck injury is yet to be ascertained. The Indian Test captain was ruled out of the IND vs SA 2nd Test after suffering a neck injury in Kolkata which even forced him to get hospitalized. It has now come to light that Gill could take longer than expected to return to action and is all but confirmed to miss the T20I series against South Africa.
Gill’s comeback to take longer than expected
As per news agency PTI, a source claimed that medical tests are being done on Gill to ascertain if his injury is a muscular one or a nerve-related niggle that requires more rest. While the source claimed that the selectors were optimistic about the star getting fit in time for the IND vs SA T20Is, it was highly doubtful that he will be a part of the series. The source added that Gill had been given an injection to alleviate his symptoms and that he will need a period of rest before commencing rehab, training and skill work.
“All tests are being done to ascertain whether it is a muscular injury or a nerve-related niggle that requires more rest. As of now, selectors will be hoping he gets fit for the South Africa T20Is. Gill has been given an injection to alleviate his symptoms and will need a period of rest before starting rehab, training and skill work. There is every chance he could also be doubtful for the T20I series,” sources told the news agency.
The report states that Gill is in Mumbai currently and has undergone a MRI scan in order to zero in on the exact reason for his injury. The team management is unwilling to rush him back to action, keeping in mind that he is an all-format player. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar has been sent the findings of the assessment that Gill underwent after meeting Dr Abhay Nene for further evaluation, the report stated. The IND vs SA T20Is is set to begin from December 9.
Later in the day, another report from the Times of India stated that, Gill is likely to check-in to the CoE, Bengaluru on December 1 or 2, but clouds on participation in the series remain.
