At home in Test cricket, India has lost four of the eight matches under Gambhir since his tenure began in July 2024.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia has backed Gautam Gambhir. The Indian head coach has been under intense scrutiny following India’s loss to South Africa in Kolkata.

Under Gambhir’s tenure, India has now lost four of their last six home Test matches, including a 0-3 whitewash to New Zealand. But the bigger issue was the pitch prepared for the Eden Gardens Test. After South Africa won, Gambhir was asked for his opinion on the surface and claimed that India had requested the pitch that was presented.

Considering only one batter scored a fifty in Kolkata, it’s safe to say the pitch wasn’t great. But Gambhir insisted it had ‘no demons’ and that Indian batters didn’t apply themselves correctly. This has infuriated the wider cricket audience. But the BCCI are standing firmly behind him.

“The BCCI has full confidence in our selectors, our coaching team, including the head coach and the players. We do not distinguish anybody. We give full support, and that is why they are doing well,” Saikia told RevSportz.

The BCCI secretary highlighted how India has found immense success under Gambhir. His examples were of white-ball cricket, and one can see why fans will criticise the statement, considering all the flak that the head coach has been receiving is for India’s poor results in Test cricket.

“As you were saying, if somebody is losing a match, there is flak on social media. That we are always ignoring, because at the same time, with the same team, we are winning the Champions Trophy, we are performing exceedingly well in the Asia Cup, we won the trophy, and we levelled the series against England in England,” he added.
