The International Cricket Council has decided to increase the number of teams participating in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup from 8 to 10 from the 2029 edition of the tournament. India women’s cricket team emerged as the winners of the latest edition, creating history after defeating South Africa in the final by 52 runs. The decision to increase the number of participating teams was taken at the ICC Board meeting on November 7.
10 teams to be part of Women’s World Cup from 2029
As per news agency PTI, among the key decisions taken during the ICC meeting on November 7 was to increase the number of teams participating in the Women’s World Cup from 8 to 10 from 2029 onwards. The decision was reportedly taken after the resounding success tasted by the WC that was co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka in 2025.
“The ICC board, keen to build on the success of the event, agreed to expand the next edition of the tournament to 10 teams (from 8 teams in 2025). Nearly 300,000 fans watched the event in stadia, breaking the record for tournament attendance for any women’s cricket event. The tournament also witnessed viewership growth and new records being set for on-screen audiences across the world, with nearly 500 million viewers in India,” it further stated,” an ICC release stated.
Meanwhile, the India vs South Africa clash in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 attracted 185 million viewers, the same as the Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 final between IND and SA did. At 446 million, the tournament’s reach exceeds the combined total of the last three ICC Women’s World Cups on digital. 21 million viewers were reportedly watching on as India women’s cricket team lifted their maiden ODI World Cup trophy on November 2.
