After winning the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup, India’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur took part in the customary trophy photoshoot. When the International Cricket Council (ICC) shared a glimpse of Harmanpreet holding the coveted World Cup trophy, all one could think of was MS Dhoni.
Deja vu
You see, the ICC chose the Gateway of India in Mumbai as the destination for the post-win trophy shoot. 14 years ago, after India’s men’s team won the 2011 ODI World Cup, then-captain Dhoni was pictured at the very same destination.
Dhoni had decided to shave his head before the trophy shoot, as he’d made a vow to donate his hair if India won the tournament. Harmanpreet didn’t go as far but was seen sporting the same big smile that Dhoni did in 2011.
The significance of both these trophies is immense. The men’s team won it for the second time, but after a 28-year wait, while the women’s team had never won a World Cup. Just like that 2011 moment inspired a generation, the 2025 glory would do the same.
