Amanjot Kaur played 7 matches for India in the Women's ODI World Cup 2025, scoring 146 runs and taking 6 wickets.

The world views cricketers as celebrities and multi-millionaires. But they don’t know about where they came from, the sacrifices they and their families made. Every woman cricketer who was part of India’s maiden Women’s World Cup title run has such a story.

Unlike men’s, women’s cricket is in a nascent stage. Although the Women’s Premier League (WPL) has provided much-needed exposure, it remains behind on most fronts. They don’t have structures like men’s cricket does. There isn’t any girls’ cricket academy to begin with.

There are societal pressures. Financial struggles. Personal issues. But all of those women who stood on the podium overcame it all. But for some of them, struggles haven’t come to an end now.

Amanjot Kaur’s family makes a sacrifice for Team India

Amanjot Kaur took the most important catch in India’s women’s cricket history. A fumbling catch of South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt was the moment that truly sealed the final for her. Amanjot had been essential for India’s success throughout the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025.

But that only happened because of Amanjot’s family. You see, her 75-year-old grandmother, Bhagwanti, had suffered a heart attack last month. To ensure she doesn’t lose focus on the job, her family didn’t even tell her what had happened.

Amanjot’s father, Bhupinder Singh, has revealed that he and other members of his family have been spending quite a bit of time in hospitals for his mother’s treatment. But didn’t tell Amanjot to ensure she does well and India wins the World Cup.

“My mother, Bhagwanti, has been Amanjot’s pillar of strength since the day she started playing cricket outside on the street and the park at our Phase 5 residence in Mohali. While I would be at my carpentry shop at Balongi, she would make sure to sit outside the home or at the park to oversee Amanjot playing with the boys, as well as other girls. After she suffered a heart attack last month, we did not tell Amanjot about it, and the last few days have seen us spending time in hospitals for her treatment. The World Cup win has surely come as a balm in these tense times for us,” Bhupinder told The Indian Express.

The sacrifices have paid off. Amanjot and India have won the World Cup. Hopefully by the time she comes back to her home, her grandmothers will return to full health and the whole family will celebrate the moment together.

“My mother is the biggest supporter of Amanjot, and once she gets well, she will make sure that Amanjot is showered with all the love and the win is celebrated,” he added.
