India have been handed a 2-wicket defeat in the IND vs AUS 2nd ODI as Shubman Gill starts his era with a loss

India cricket team were handed a 2-wicket loss in the IND vs AUS 2nd ODI in Adelaide as Mitchell Marsh and co. clinched the series 2-0 on Thursday. Having won the first game in Perth, the hosts put on a clinical performance to win the 2nd ODI, despite the visitors putting up a strong fightback. Despite valiant efforts from Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer with the bat, and Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana and Washington Sundar with the ball, India failed to defend the 265-run total and were instead completely outfoxed by the Aussies.

India face yet another away series defeat

India last faced a series defeat in ODIs away in Sri Lanka back in 2024, when Rohit Sharma was the captain of the team. Shubman Gill, who took over as the captain in the 50-over format before the IND vs AUS series, has now been dealt with back-to-back defeats, with a 7-wicket loss in Perth followed by a 2-wicket defeat in Adelaide. The loss marks the first for India under Gill’s captaincy.

Australia won the toss and opted to bowl first in the contest. Gill (9) and Virat Kohli (0) were dismissed cheaply as Xavier Bartlett struck twice in quick succession. Rohit (73) and Shreyas (61) helped the visitors resurrect their innings but failed to convert their knocks to big scores despite getting a 100+ run partnership. A handy 44-run knock form Axar Patel along with a late 24-run cameo from Harshit Rana powered India to 264 runs at the end of 50 overs.

Short (74) and Connolly (61) were instrumental in ensuring that Australia had the upper hand in the run-chase. 28 from Head, 30 from Renshaw, and 36 from Owen surely helped Australia’s cause. At the end, the hosts clinched a 2-wicket win with 4.2 overs to spare.
