Team India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate revealed how the team's plans to enforce a follow-on in the IND vs WI 2nd Test backfired

India cricket team assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate hinted at India’s plan to enforce a follow-on on the West Indies in the IND vs WI 2nd Test has potentially backfired on the team. After bowling out the visitors for 248 runs in their 1st innings, Shubman Gill decided to ask them to bat once again. And, that proved to be a shot in the arm for India as WI finished at 173/2 at the end of Day 3, and trailing India by just 97 runs.

Wrong idea to enforce follow-on?

Speaking after stumps on Day 3, Doeschate revealed that while there were talks in the Indian dressing room to bat again, the team felt that the 275-run lead was good enough. He said that while the team expected the pitch to keep deteriorating and had expected the worst to be over when they bowled out the Windies, it only slowed down further.

There was a discussion to bat. Obviously, those last two wickets took a little bit longer than we would have hoped for. It probably started going towards the fact where you do look to bat again, but we felt 275 was a good lead. We thought the wicket was going to keep deteriorating. We thought by ending the WI innings, the worst was over. But it just seems to have slowed down even more,” Doeschate said.

John Campbell became the first WI batter to score a half-century in the ongoing series and is poised to breach the triple-figure mark on Day 4. Shai Hope has also crossed the fifty-run mark. Speaking on India’s plans for Day 4, Doeschate said that it was extremely important to be super patient on wickets that were unresponsive.

It is a mental adjustment. We obviously want to work with speed. It’s probably the one thing you can play with. You saw every time when they bowled a little bit slower, you get a little bit more turn, and obviously, the batter has a bit more time. So, it’s about striking the balance and using the change in pace to get a mistake out of the batter,” he added.
