Sai Sudharsan’s wait for his maiden Test hundred continues. After looking in complete control in the India vs West Indies 2nd Test, the new Indian number three fell 13 runs short of getting to the milestone.
Although India Test captain Shubman Gill had backed Sudharsan, he knew that time was running out for him. With so much competition, the sooner he scored big, the better. Coming into the match, the left-handed batter averages just 21 in Test cricket after 7 innings.
Although a short sample size, for someone of his talent, this wasn’t great. With players ready to pounce at the opportunity, Sudharsan had to score. And that he did. In fact, he was in such a touch that he’d played zero false shots at the moment he reached his second Test fifty.

Slowly, he was chipping away. But a good ball from West Indies’ vice-captain Jomel Warrican got the better of him in the 69th over of the first innings. He looked like he was itching to reach three figures. One could sense that Sudharsan was a bit nervous.
But the dismissal had nothing to do with Sudharsan. Warrican spun the ball big, seemingly out of nowhere, and pinned him in front of the wicket. He didn’t get his maiden hundred, but one can see why Gill and the management view Sudharsan as someone in for the long haul.
During his 165-ball stay, he looked at ease. Spin or pace, nothing troubled him. Yes, the pitch had no demons, but the resolve Sudharsan showed was great. He had applied himself in England similarly, but the results weren’t favourable for him there. Now, he has the chance to cash in at home and seal the number three spot.
