South Africa cricket team captain Temba Bavuma anticipates the upcoming IND vs SA Test series to be more challenging than their series against Pakistan. The current World Test Championship (WTC) champions will take on Shubman Gill and co. in a two-match series in November. A lot has changed from the last time India locked horns with South Africa in Tests, with the departure of legends like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from the red-ball setup.
Bavuma’s two cents on no Rohit, Virat in India’s Test team
Speaking after being honoured at the CEAT Cricket Rating Awards, Bavuma credited Rohit and Virat for making India into a ‘feared team’ across the globe. He noted that the team had now entered a new era and said that the youngsters who were mentored and inspired by the veteran duo have now taken over the reins of the Indian side. Bavuma said he was confident that India would dominate in the two-match series but said that it was South Africa’s job to keep that in check.
“It seems as if a new era has kicked in. Guys like Rohit, before him, Kohli, they have done their job. They put India really on their mat and they’ve made India a team to really be feared. I don’t think it takes anything away from what they have done for Indian cricket. It’s just the way the game goes. At some point, the sun stops shining on you. The younger guys, the ones that you have mentored, the ones that you have inspired, they take over the reins,” Bavuma said.
Prior to the series against India, Bavuma’s South Africa will take on Pakistan where they have a golden opportunity to get used to the sub-continental conditions before arriving in India. The Proteas captain acknowledged that the Indian spinners would have an advantage while playing at home while foreign spinners would take some time to adjust themselves.
