Beth Mooney's innings had shades of Glenn Maxwell's marathon knock vs Afghanistan in 2023 World Cup.

Beth Mooney has once again stood tall in a time of crisis. The Australian star smashed her first ever century in Women’s World Cups in an epic rescue act in Colombo. Australia were reeling at 76/7 against Pakistan, before Mooney’s century guided them to a competitive 221 on Wednesday.

Beth Mooney’s lone warrior act saves Australia blushes

Beth Mooney walked into bat after Australia lost both their openers for the score of 30. The left-hander began in typical fashion, keeping the scoreboard ticking. However all hell broke lose soon after. From 55/2, Australia lost 5 wickets for the space of just 21 runs. Mooney watched on from the other end as the defending champions crumbled, possibly into an upset.

She was however not done yet. Mooney stitched a valuable partnership with Kim Garth initially to stem the flow of wickets. The 35-run partnership meant that the game went deeper, allowing Australia to claw back into the game.

Alana King joined after Garth was dismissed and Mooney found the perfect partner. Mooney reached her half-century in the 34th over, with Australia still below 120. She upped the ante and batted out the rest of the innings in the company of King. The duo put on 106 off just 97 balls, with Mooney reaching her century in the 48th over. She was dismissed off the final ball of the innings for 109, having single handed ensured Australia had a fighting chance for a win.
