The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have been deliberating about continuing with Salman Ali Agha as Pakistan’s T20I captain. Despite taking the Men in Green to the Asia Cup final, Agha’s own performance wasn’t up to the mark. In 7 matches, he scored 72 runs at 12, and that too at a strike rate of just 80.89.

According to the Tribune, the PCB weren’t sold on Salman continuing. They wanted to revert to Shaheen Shah Afridi as Pakistan’s T20I captain, but the selectors and white-ball coach Mike Hesson opposed the decision.
Hession and the selectors think that since the team’s performance has been good, just 13 losses in 30 matches, Salman should be given a long rope to succeed as a batter.

To defend their position, they also brought up India’s T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav. They claimed that someone of Suryakumar’s calibre wasn’t in great touch during either and, like Salman, he scored 72 runs in the Asia Cup with an average of 18.
Despite his non-performance, there hasn’t been much discussion about Suryakumar getting moved on from. Similarly, PCB should persist with Salman for the time being.
Babar Azam‘s name also came up during the discussion, but the selectors and Hesson didn’t think he should be brought back. There has been no significant improvement in Babar’s intent, and they think young players should be backed instead of him.
Salman and Pakistan’s next challenge will be against South Africa, with three matches scheduled on October 28, 31, and November 1.
