The 2025 Irani Cup was a well-fought competition between the reigning Ranji Trophy champions, Vidarbha, and the Rest of India. But had on-field umpires Kannur Swaroopanand and Rohan Pandit not acted quickly, an actual fight would have broken out in the Irani Cup.
Fight during the Irani Cup
In the 63rd over of the fourth innings, Yash Dhull was caught at third man by Atharva Taide. The rest of India rejoiced as they were just 3 wickets away from clinching the Irani Cup. Yash Thakur was ecstatic after taking his first wicket of the innings and fifth of the match.
Dhull was batting at 92 and missed out on a deserved hundred. He was gutted. Thakur’s celebration hurt the batter from Delhi, who said something to the fast bowler on his way back. Instead of joining his teammate after taking the wicket, Thakur charged towards Dhull.
The batter stood at the crease calmly while Thakur came towards him. The bowler from Vidarbha looked very agitated, and it seemed like a physical fight between the two would happen. Just then, the umpires came in between the two. They kept exchanging words while other Vidarbha players tried to calm things down.
Thakur was taken away by his teammates, while Dhull was sent to the pavillion by the umpires. They kept sharing glances while walking away. Had the umpires not gotten there in time, things could have been much worse. Luckily, they handled it well.
The incident didn’t change the outcome of the match. In the next 10 overs, Vidarbha managed to take the remaining 3 wickets to win the Irani Cup.
