Gill is now only the second Indian captain to a score a half-century on his home captaincy debut.

Shubman Gill marked his home captaincy debut with a fine show in Ahmedabad on Friday. Gill had joined KL Rahul overnight on Day 1 of the IND vs WI 1st Test. The Indian captain looked well settled and marched yet another half-century only to perish soon after in an opportunity missed at his favourite venue.

Opportunity missed for Shubman Gill?

Shubman Gill has batted like a dream in 2025. The Indian Test captain has the most runs in the format in this calendar year and is far ahead of teammate KL Rahul. Facing the struggling West Indies, Shubman had the chance to plunder a few more runs and continue his ascent.

The 26-year-old did take the initial leap. He came into bat late on Day 1 and survived till end of play. On Day 2, Gill looked in sublime touch, picking a few more boundaries. Much like his predecessor Virat Kohli, Gill focused well on rotating strike and building partnership. He eventually reached his 8th Test fifty, and his first as captain at home.

Gill’s half-century meant he achieved another milestone. He became the first Indian captain since Sunil Gavaskar to score a half-century on his home debut. Gavaskar had scored a stunning 205 against the same opposition in 1978 at the Wankhede Stadium. Since then India’s greatest players have captained the side at home, including Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, but none could match that mark.

Shubman looked set for another giant score, but he perished in the very next over. The Indian captain is sure to look at as an opportunity missed for another century to continue his golden run in 2025. India had the chance to bat West Indies out of the game and Gill’s dismissal before lunch put paid to that opporutnity.
