Out of favour Bangladesh cricket team star Shakib al Hasan’s future is in serious jeopardy as the country’s sports adviser has vowed to never let him play for the team again. The former BAN skipper last featured in an international game back in October 2024 following which he has been snubbed across formats of the game. Shakib, who was an Awami League MP in the Sheikh Hasina government, got into trouble after the govt was overthrown last year and has been charged with corruption and murder among other charges.
Shakib’s international career to end
Speaking to Channel 24, Bangladesh Youth and Sports adviser Asif Mahmud said that Shakib could not wear the BAN jersey and vowed to never let him play for the country again. His remarks came after the all-rounder posted a picture of himself with Hasina on social media platform Instagram on her birthday. Asif further claimed that he was right in not allowing Hasan to rehabilitate.
“He cannot be allowed to carry the Bangladesh flag. Wearing the Bangladesh jersey is not something I can possibly approve. Shakib Al Hasan will never play for Bangladesh again,” Asif said.
Shakib was available for selection for the Champions Trophy earlier this year but wasn’t picked. Ever since his ouster from the Bangladesh team, the all-rounder has been taking part in various leagues and tournaments across the globe. Menawhile, Bangladesh have clearly moved on from Hasan, with Litton Das leading the T20I side and Mehidy Hasan Miraz leading the side in ODIs and Tests.
Allegations against Shakib
- Stock market manipulation
- Engaging in illegal gambling and casino ventures
- Gold smuggling
- Siphoning money from crab traders
- Cricket-related corruption
- Hiding assets in his election affidavit
Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), which once appointed Shakib Al Hasan as their brand ambassador, launched a probe into “irregularities and corruption” earlier in April.
“We fear that there may come a point where he becomes the subject of an ACC case,” Bangladesh ACC chairman Mohammad Abdul Momen told the local media.
