The BCCI has decided to give an additional Rs 1 crore as match fee for any player who takes part in 14 first-class games in a season

In a bid to push its efforts to prioritize domestic cricket further, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to give players who feature in 14 first-class games an additional reward. Since the start of 2024, the board has been taking multiple steps to push youngsters and other senior cricketers to play as much as domestic cricket as possible, when not on national duty. In line with the efforts, the BCCI has announced that any player who takes part in 14 first-class games in a season will receive an additional match fee of Rs 1 crore.

As per Times of India, former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh – who represented the Punjab Cricket Association at the BCCI’s AGM – said that the move was aimed at giving more money for a player who played more domestic games in a season. He explained that the move would act as an incentive for teams to reach the finals of a tournament and win it as well.

It has been decided that if a player plays more domestic matches in a season, he will get more money, this will be an incentive for teams to reach the finals of domestic tournaments. If a cricketer plays 14 first-class matches a season, he will get an additional match fee of Rs 1 crore,” Harbhajan Singh said.

There are multiple Indian cricketers who feature for their states in domestic tournaments regularly and do not have an IPL contract or a lucrative contract in a state T20 league. This move will act as a confidence booster for those cricketers as they will now be encouraged to play as many games as they can for their states. The additional match fee of Rs 1 crore on playing 14 matches could come of great help to stars who don’t have an IPL contract and nor are in the BCCI’s Central Contracts list such as Abhimanyu Easwaran.
