BCCI recruits Punjab Kings support staff member as CoE spin bowling coach before IND vs WI Tests

Punjab Kings will have to find a new spin bowling coach for the IPL 2026 season. Fascinatingly, the last spin coach at BCCI CoE is also involved with an IPL franchise.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed Sunil Joshi as the bowling coach at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.

According to the Times of India, the 55-year-old, who played 84 matches for India, will take charge from October 1, a day before the India vs West Indies Test series kicks off in Ahmedabad.

Joshi was involved in the recently concluded Duleep Trophy and even travelled with the India A team for their recent first-class matches against Australia A in Lucknow. The former left-arm spinner will replace Sairaj Bahutale, who had left the job to become the Rajasthan Royals spin bowling coach.

Sunil Joshi becomes BCCI CoE coach

Joshi himself was involved in the Indian Premier League (IPL), serving as Punjab Kings bowling coach from season 2023 to 2025. In domestic cricket, he has coached Assam, Jammu & Kashmir, and Hyderabad. On the international front, Joshi has worked with Bangladesh, the USA, and Oman.

The BCCI wanted someone who could work on the development and performance enhancement of all age groups and both genders. They felt Joshi was a proper fit for these requirements, and that’s why they piped the likes of Rakesh Dhruv and Nooshin Al Khadeer, who is the current India U-19 women’s team coach. Although not relevant to the coach gig, Joshi was also the chairman of selectors from 4 March 2020 to November 2022.

Joshi will work closely with the CoE head and his former India teammate VVS Laxman. He’ll aid him in identifying and nurturing up-and-coming spinners. But that won’t be all. He’ll also work with the current spinners who are part of India’s national team and the ones who’ll train at the CoE.
