Rating Sri Lanka squad for Women’s World Cup: Non-existent pace attack & over-reliance on Athapaththu (4/10)

ICC Women's World Cup 2025: The Sri Lanka team will come as underdogs in the competition, and not many hoped are pinned on them.

Sri Lanka were never a powerhouse in women’s cricket, like the men’s team was at one point of time. But to be fair to the Islanders, the team is showing some improvements in all the departments, under the leadership of their veteran all-rounder Chamari Athapaththu. There are some experienced names in the side like — Harshitha Samarawickrama, Nilakshika de Silva and Anushka Sanjeewani, but their effectiveness in the tournament cannot be predicted for now.

InsideSport ranks the Sri Lanka squad for the Women’s World Cup 2025.

Major expectations from Chamari Athapaththu only

The skipper is the main batter of the team. She has played 115 games, scored 3877 runs at an average of 35, with 9 tons and 19 fifties. She has a highest score of 195, which shows that she can bat rapidly, if situation demands. To go with that she has 45 wickets too. Harshitha Samarawickrama will be their second main batter, and has a decent average of 30. Expectations will be from Nilakshika as well.

Pace bowling a problem

There is Piumi, Malki Madara and Prabodani in the team but wicket-taking ability is questionable for sure. Prabodani, for example has only 36 wickets in 70 matches, and the other two are inexperienced. This, along with Bangladesh could be one of the worst pace bowling attacks.

Spinners galore in team

All-rounder Dilhari is an ace-spinner too who has 29 wickets in 32 matches. She would be supported by the captain herself. Sugandika is a good left-arm spinner, while Ranaweera is their most experienced bowler with 80 wickets. One can’t really gauge, how this team will really face the top teams of the world, but then, spin is their strength for sure.
