South African legend Allan Donald has backed Sourav Ganguly for success in the SA20 starting later this year. The former India captain will coach the Pretoria Capitals side, marking his first foray into high stakes coaching. Dada has remained connected to cricket since his retirement in 2008, but only at an administrative level.
He has a fantastic cricket brain: Donald hails Ganguly ahead of coaching debut
Speaking to Indian media during an interaction facilitated by SA20, Allan Donald felt that Sourav Ganguly will be under pressure to bring success to Preotoria Capitals. Ganguly was announced as head coach for Season 4 which begins on Boxing Day later this year. Pretoria Capitals have struggled in 3 seasons and have hit a complete reset, hoping Dada can guide them to glory.
“Ganguly has a fantastic cricket brain. There’s no doubt that he will bring that experience to the fore with Pretoria Capitals. It’s a very good squad that he’s got there and they have such a great fan base as well. We are going to see full houses,” Donald said as quoted by PTI.
Ganguly was at the SA20 Auction earlier this week, sanctioning the record purchase of Dewald Brevis. The franchise are a sister franchise of Delhi Capitals, with Ganguly having served as director of cricket and mentor before at the Kotla.
“I think the people of Pretoria are expecting and expecting a lot. So, the pressure will be on Sourav for sure. But knowing him, he will come with a great plan,” added Donald.
Donald is no stranger to coaching, with stints with Pune Warriors India, South Africa, Warwickshire and New Zealand among a few. The 58-year-old believes Ganguly’s presence alone should be beneficial for SA20.
“He’ll bring plenty of experience. He’s been around the game for a very, very long time, not necessarily as a coach. Sourav Ganguly, he’s coming with his batting philosophies. It’s amazing. You might only play three games as a young man, but the learning from that month you’re going to have by being in the same dressing room as those guys, no one can buy that,” he concluded.
