Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid had brought out a change in T20I cricket after that humiliating loss to England in the 2022 T20 World Cup semifinal. From that moment, Team India shifted their conservative approach to an aggressive one. This culminated in winning the 2024 T20 World Cup without dropping a game.
Suryakumar Yadav and Gautam Gambhir haven’t just followed the template set by their predecessors but perfected it. Since taking over as captain and head coach, Team India have won four series on the trot, beating sides like South Africa and England.
The T20I team has become such a behemoth that hardly anyone talks about missing Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma. But at the end of the day, Team India has won just bilateral matches. Multinational tournaments like the 2025 T20 Asia Cup are just different. That too on sluggish pitches in the UAE.
No changes for the Asia Cup
It’s also Suryakumar’s first time leading the team in a major event. Is Team India planning to change things up? Will their brand of cricket, which at the moment is being ultra-aggressive, change? The 360-degree batter says no.
“Abhi tak toh sab badiya chal raha hai, toh bina matlab ke kyu ungli kare? Acha chal raha hai, wahi same cheez follow karte rahenge jo last jitne bilaterals meh acha hua hai. (Why change anything if it’s working? All’s going well; we’ll follow the same method we’ve used in the bilateral series),” he said at the Asia Cup captains’ meet.

This statement from Suryakumar would suggest that India would play aggressively with the bat, play a lot of all-rounders, and perhaps go with just three frontline bowlers, including two spinners like they did in the 2025 Champions Trophy.
“We will keep continuing the same things. If something is working, that means we are going in the right direction,” the Indian captain added.
