Rajasthan Royals pacer Sandeep Sharma has waded into the debate on if Shreyas Iyer should be given Team India captaincy in the future. The Mumbai batter, who has been snubbed from the Asia Cup squad, led Punjab Kings in a vastly successful campaign in IPL 2025. Sharma opined that one cannot ask for captaincy to be handed over to Iyer just because he fared well in the IPL.
Sharma against Iyer being India captain
In an interview with CricTracker, Sandeep explained that it made no sense to say Iyer should be made captain because he led PBKS to the IPL 2025 final. He pointed out that handling an IPL team was very different from leading the Indian side. Sharma stressed on the need for people to differentiate between the two before making comments on captaincy.
“Like that BCCI has its own domestic league, right? And when you are picking an international team, there you are picking 15 people. So you pick a captain who will manage 15 people better there. Here in IPL, you have a lot of domestic players, a lot of young players. Some of them come from overseas. But here you are picking someone who will manage 15 people better here. So this debate, I feel senseless that what is he doing in IPL,” Sharma said.
Iyer’s record as captain in 2024/25
While Shreyas Iyer has never captained the ODI or T20I side, he has ample experience in leading Mumbai in the domestic circuit. He led the side in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024/25 in which he amassed 325 runs from 5 matches. Iyer also captained Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 and led them to the title. Iyer led KKR to their third IPL title in 2024 following which he was released by he franchise. In IPL 2025, Shreyas Iyer-led Punjab Kings finished at the top of the points table with 9 wins from 14 matches.
