The Oval Test, July 31 to August 4, was the last time Shubman Gill played competitive cricket. Since then, he's been on a break.

Shubman Gill, who wasn’t able to play in the Duleep Trophy due to viral fever, will report to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Centre of Excellence (CoE) on August 29. The 25-year-old was named the North Zone’s captain, but since he came down with the weather, it was decided that he should skip the premier domestic tournament.

Gill’s fitness test for Asia Cup

According to the Times of India, Gill has recovered and started training. The India Test captain hit the gym in Mohali on August 28 and practiced in the nets as well. However, due to consistent rain, Gill hasn’t been able to access the required facilities. That’s why, to prepare for the Asia Cup, the 25-year-old will fly to Bengaluru as soon as possible.

It was previously reported that Gill will undergo a fitness assessment ahead of the Asia Cup alongside KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma on either August 30 or 31. While that seems to be the case for him and Rahul, Rohit’s fitness test has been pushed back to the middle of September.

Dubai to be India’s base

With Team India scheduled to leave for Dubai on September 4, Gill will depart for the Asia Cup from Bengaluru. Several members of India’s T20I squad are already at the CoE. Since the team management decided that they won’t hold a pre-tournament camp, the Men in Blue will start practicing from September 5 itself.

Team India will use Dubai as their base for the Asia Cup. For any matches played in Abu Dhabi, the Suryakumar Yadav-led side will travel there and then return to Dubai on the same day. India will play Oman in Abu Dhabi on September 19 and, if they qualify for the Super Four stage as the second-ranked team in Group A, again on September 23.
