The Indian government has ambitions of hosting major sporting events and Wednesday marked a first step in that direction. The PM led cabinet approved a proposal bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

“The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi approved the proposal of the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports for submission of bid for the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2030,” stated a press release from the Press Information Bureau.

“It also gave its approval to sign the Host Collaboration Agreement (HCA) along with the required Guarantees from concerned Ministries, Departments and Authorities and sanction of required grant-in-aid to Gujarat Government, in case the bid gets accepted,” the release added.

The quadrennial event was last hosted by India in 2010. Ahmedabad, given it’s world-class stadiums and facilities is the the primary reasoning. The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad hosted the 2023 Cricket World Cup final. The venue has held the IPL final twice since being inaugurated.

“Ahmedabad is an ideal host city offering world class stadiums, cutting-edge training facilities, and a passionate sporting culture,” the Centre said in the same press release.
