While Shubman Gill seems like the only option as an all-format skipper for Team India in the future, ex-cricketers still rate a few others very highly. One of them is ex-India cap Manoj Tiwary, who feels that a batter can lead the ODI team really well, after Rohit Sharma retires from the format too.
Who Should be ODI Skipper After Rohit Sharma?
In an interview with Crictracker, Tiwari also listed the reason, as to why this player is suitable for the job. “After Rohit Sharma, obviously, I would say Shreyas Iyer, because the way he has led, wherever he has led in the franchise cricket, I have not seen him in the first-class cricket, but he has got a trophy as well for Mumbai in domestic as well.
“But when I was doing commentary, where I have observed the evolution of Shreyas Iyer as the captain, and when you see he’s one of the captain who leads from the front, he scores a lot of runs, and he leads, and he makes great decisions on feed, which is a must for a good captain, and he does that with good success, which we have seen in KKR tenure.”
Manoj Tiwary Puts Weight Behind Shreyas Iyer
Manoj Tiwari added that Shreyas Iyer did not get the credit for taking KKR to a title win, all because of the PR. “In 2024, KKR emerged champions, where he was a captain, but he didn’t get the credit which he was supposed to get. Now, the PR runs in such a way that the credit is given to only one individual in the team. I felt that he should have also got the credit, along with Chandrakant Pandit, and Bharat Arun as well. They were also the supporting staff, the leader who takes the call on field,” he added.
Coming back to the Indian team, Tiwari said that Iyer would lead the team well and for a long time. Even though he has some stiff competition in Gill. “I feel Shreyas Iyer will eventually lead Team India, and he will lead for a long period of time. But at the same time, he will be fighting this captaincy battle with Shubman Gill because the current coach, Gautam Gambhir likes Shubman Gill more than Shreyas Iyer. So there will be a fight. But let’s see what happens, what the future unfolds for all of us.”
