Simarjeet Singh is one of the most promising fast bowlers in India. The right-arm pacer consistently hits the 140 km mark and has been earmarked by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as well. The board recently organised a fast-bowling development camp at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, and Simarjeet was one of them.
Simarjeet’s talent has been recognised by Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) bagged him for Rs 20 lakh in 2022, and he stayed with them until 2024. After showing promise for CSK and great performance in the Delhi Premier League 2024, the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) shelled out Rs 1.5 crore for him at the IPL 2025 auction.
Bumrah & Cummins’ invaluable advice
In an exclusive conversation with InsideSport, Simarjeet revealed how the IPL has helped him. He particularly named three bowlers who’ve been of great help. First was Jasprit Bumrah. Considered one of the greatest T20 bowlers, the Mumbai Indians have been Simarjeet’s competitor in the IPL, but he doesn’t shy away from answering his queries.
“I ask bowlers for advice. What’s their process, and how can it help me improve? In the IPL, a lot of bowlers help you learn new things, like Bumrah Bhai and Pat Cummins,” Simarjeet told InsideSport.
Of course, playing for SRH, the 27-year-old leaned on captain Pat Cummins for advice as well. For the most part, Simarjeet asked the modern-day greats about their execution skills when it comes to bowling a deadly yorker or a change-up slower ball. But the most important bit was how to go about things when their plans aren’t working.
“You ask them what things they do that make them dominate batters for so many years. How they bowl the slower one or consistently deliver good yorkers. What if your plans aren’t working? I ask what more I can do to improve and perform better in this regard,” the pacer added.
Shami mentors Simarjeet Singh
Simarjeet revealed that Mohammed Shami was his mentor during his time with SRH. The 27-year-old was on the veteran’s side throughout, asking him questions constantly. Shami would tell him about the areas he needed to improve during the net sessions and matches. Simarjeet didn’t have a great IPL 2025 season, but these learnings will help him become the best version of himself in the coming years.
“Shami Bhai is a legend. I primarily asked him about how he swings and seams the ball so much, and how I can do the same consistently. I would sit next to him while travelling and ask a lot of questions, which he used to happily answer. During practice and matches, he would tell me what things I was doing right and where I was lacking,” said Simarjeet.
