BCCI trashes reports of Shreyas Iyer as next ODI captain, 'no way Gill shouldn't take over'

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has dismissed reports of Shreyas Iyer being considered as the next ODI captain & Rohit Sharma's successor

A day after reports claimed that the BCCI was keen on making Shreyas Iyer the next ODI captain, the board has categorically rejected such speculations. On Thursday, a Dainik Jagaran report claimed that the Mumbai batter was likely to succeed Rohit Sharma as the skipper in the 50-over format once the latter takes a call on his future. However, the BCCI has clarified that no such discussions have taken place, and has thrown its weight behind Gill to take over the leadership.

BCCI secretary says no discussions on Iyer

Speaking to Hindustan Times, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia categorically rejected reports of Shreyas being considered for ODI captaincy. The official told he publication that no such discussions had taken place, adding that the report came as a news to him. Intrestingly, the report which claimed that the BCCI was looking to make Iyer the ODI skipper came just days after he was snubbed from India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad.

That’s news to me. There have been no such discussions,” BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said.

Gill backed to become next ODI skipper

As per the report, a BCCI source told the publication that there was no reason why Shubman Gill shouldn’t take over the leadership in ODIs in the future. The Punjab batter, who was recently elevated as the Test captain, was named India’s vice-captain during Champions Trophy and is Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy in T20Is for Asia Cup. For now, India have three captains for the three formats – Rohit Sharma in ODIs, Shubman Gill in Tests and Suryakumar Yadav in T20Is.

He averages 59 in ODI cricket and is already the vice-captain of the team. There is no way someone who has recently been appointed Test captain, found some success and has age on his side should not take over leadership in ODI cricket, when the time comes,” stated the source.
