India cricket team star Shreyas Iyer’s father lashed out at the selectors after the star was left out from India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad. Despite putting up consistent performances across formats, including in IPL 2025, the middle-order batter found no place in the 15-man squad. Surprisingly, he did not even make it to the 5-men reserves list either.
‘What else does he have to do?’
Speaking to Times of India, Shreyas’ father Santosh pointed out that Iyer had been performing well year after year in the IPL. He voiced his frustration by noting that he doesn’t know what else should the batter do to be included in the T20I team. When asked about his exclusion, chief selector Ajit Agarkar had claimed that while it was neither Iyer’s fault nor the selectors, the former had to wait for his chance.
“I don’t know what else Shreyas has to do to make it to the Indian T20 team. He has been performing so well in the IPL year after year, from Delhi Capitals to Kolkata Knight Riders to Punjab Kings, and that too as a captain. He even captained KKR to the IPL title in 2024, and led PBKS to the final this year,” Iyer’s father said.
Further, Shreyas’ father claimed that while he did not expect his son to be named captain, the least that the selectors could do was to have him in the team. He said that while Iyer did not show any disappointment on his face after being left out from the side, he was naturally disappointed.
“I’m not saying make him the Indian captain but at least select him in the team – even if he’s left out of the team, he doesn’t show dissent on his face. He’ll just say ‘Mera naseeb hai‘. You can’t do anything now’ – He’s always cool & calm. He doesn’t blame anybody but deep inside, he must be naturally disappointed,” Shreyas’ father added.
BCCI’s logic
Meanwhile, a BCCI source claimed that a player with the caliber that of Iyer couldn’t afford to be named on the reserves list. The official stressed that Shreyas must wait for his chance in the future.
“A seasoned player like Shreyas can’t be named in the reserves, please understand this. If you pick him, he plays in the XI. No one has any grudge against Iyer. He will get his chances and play many matches for India in all three formats of the game. It’s just that right now, he doesn’t fit in,” the BCCI source said.
