A glitch in the matrix or the ICC website? That’s a good question to ask. Earlier today, the international cricket body released the updated ODI batting rankings. With the West Indies vs Pakistan being the last series, not many changes were made. Well, that is, until you noticed that both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had dropped out of the ranking.
Rohit Sharma & Virat Kohli disappear from ODI rankings
Just a week ago, Rohit was ranked No. 2 and Kohli No. 4 in the ICC ranking. The former had 756 rating points, while the latter was just 20 points behind him. For a little while now, there have been rumours that both will be shown the door by the BCCI.
Recently, a former selector had stated that Rohit and Kohli were forced into Test retirement. Fans feared something similar was happening in ODIs as well. They expressed their shock, speculating whether the modern greats are retiring from the format.
ICC corrects themselves
But that isn’t new. The ICC has made such mistakes several times. In 2023, a glitch showed that India were the number one ranked team in the world in all formats when that wasn’t the case at all. But since the rumours regarding Rohit and Kohli’s potential retirement were swirling around, fans chose to presume it’s the end for them.
A couple of hours later, the ICC corrected their mistakes. Rohit was back at number two, with a potential chance of overtaking Shubman Gill as the number one ODI batter against Australia in October. Kohli, who has been in the top 10 since 2010, returned as well.
