On September 14, India will play Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025. But this time around, there isn’t any excitement. There has been vocal displeasure in India regarding the government allowing India to play against Pakistan in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack.
Last month, two legends cricket matches between India and Pakistan were cancelled. The public wasn’t pleased with even retired Indian players going toe-to-toe with ex-Pakistani cricketers. Here, we are talking about current stars. In no way would the Indian public be on board.
Pakistan okay with cancellation of India match
Former Indian cricketers have openly called for boycotting the match. But that’s the Indian sentiment. According to Wasim Akram, people in Pakistan don’t care if the India vs Pakistan match goes ahead or not.
“The Asia Cup schedule is out; there is backlash. But we in Pakistan are calm. We will be fine whether we play or don’t play. The game must go on,” Akram said on the Stick with Cricket Podcast.
“Politics apart, I am not a politician. They are patriotic about their country; we are patriotic about ours. Let’s not go below the belt. Talk about the triumphs of your country; the same goes for Pakistan, and the same goes for India. It is easier said than done,” he added.
For over a decade now, the relationship between India and Pakistan has been fractured. The nations haven’t played a bilateral series since 2012. And 2008 was the last time they played a Test series between them. It doesn’t seem like the relationship would improve. Akram hopes it does. He desires to see both teams play a Test series while he’s alive.
“I hope to see a Test series between India and Pakistan in my lifetime,” Akram concluded.
