'Don't talk about another player's contract' Ex-CSK teammate slams Ravi Ashwin after Dewald Brevis comments

Ravichandran Ashwin's comments on Dewald Brevis signing by CSK has led to a furore.

Ravichandran Ashwin has landed himself in controversy. The Chennai Super Kings star alleged that his franchise ‘paid more’ than the auction price for Dewald Brevis to sign him as replacement mid IPL 2025. CSK have since clarified with an official statement, all but signaling end of their ties with Ashwin. The 38-year-old has copped criticism for his part, with Anirudha Srikkanth, his ex CSK teammate slamming his conduct.

This is a problem it can lead to: Ex-CSK star slams Ashwin

CSK signed Dewald Brevis as a replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh mid IPL 2025. Brevis was comfortably their best batter and has seen his career take off since. Now, the 22-year-old has made his Test debut, smashed a T20I century and will feature in the ODIs for the Proteas.

Ashwin who remains part of the CSK squad, hinted that the franchise paid ‘extra’ to get the South African on board. Brevis was snapped up for Rs 2.2 crore, the same price as Gurjapneet Singh’s deal. Ashwin’s comments created furore, with the franchise releasing a statement to clarify any misgivings.

Former CSK batter, Anirudha Srikkanth believes Ashwin’s comments were wrong and unnecessary.

“This has come right after Ashwin, on his YouTube channel, spoke about his contract. Which I feel is, first of all, very, very wrong. Being a current player, being in the same team, talking about another player’s contract – even though it might have been in a different context – this is the problem it can lead to,” the former CSK star said on the Cheeky Cheeka podcast.

Ashwin clarifies stance

Post CSK statement, Ravichandran Ashwin has clarified his comments. The veteran revealed that he was being taken out of context and the franchise complied with the IPL rules.

“My intent in the old video was to talk about Brevis’ batting, not about his IPL signing amount,” he said, stressing that every deal goes through the franchise and governing body,” he said.
